The announcement was made via WAEC’s verified X (formerly Twitter) account and has been widely reported across major Nigerian media outlets. The WAEC 2025 WASSCE saw nearly two million students from Nigeria and other West African countries participate.
Nearly 2 Million Candidates Sat for WAEC 2025
According to Dr. Amos Dangut, WAEC’s Head of Nigeria National Office, 1,973,365 candidates registered from 23,554 secondary schools, with 1,969,313 students eventually sitting for the examination conducted from April 24 to June 20, 2025.
Candidates included nationals from Benin Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, and Equatorial Guinea who wrote the exam in Nigeria. WAEC also confirmed that 12,178 special needs candidates, including the visually and hearing impaired, participated with proper accommodations in place.
WAEC 2025 Result: Massive Drop in Pass Rate
The WAEC 2025 Result revealed a significant drop in student performance compared to the 2024 examination.
- 87.24% (1,718,090 candidates) obtained credits and above in at least five subjects (with or without English and Mathematics).
- Only 38.32% (754,545 candidates) earned credits in five subjects including English Language and Mathematics, the benchmark for university admission.
This marks a steep decline from 72.12% in 2024 — a drop of over 33 percentage points. WAEC attributed this fall to factors such as curriculum overload, insufficient teachers in public schools, and infrastructural challenges at some examination centres.
